Just got back,to,rainy chilly Derbyshire after a fortnight’s bliss at Bocaddon. The Meiklems are wonderful hosts and the house, self-catering cottages and grounds are all beautifully maintained and cared for.
Katie’s Cottage was perfect as we had our elderly mother with us for some of the time and she was very comfortable in the room downstairs with its fully equipped disabled access loo and wet room close at hand.
The cottage was just as described in the literature and on the Website; the addition of a bottle of cool white wine and a proper Cornish cream tea in the fridge was an unexpected pleasant surprise after a long old drive down.
We were in Cornwall for a family wedding and the day after the event, our newly weds had asked if we would host a bbq for all their friends whom they’d not been able to see properly on D-day in the busy-ness of the ceremony, wedding breakfast etc.
Not only did Alison positively encourage such a mad enterprise, but she also lent us the Meiklem family’s own gas barbecue as we were catering for about 50 to 60 people; a great time was had by all with the only mishap being the demise of an inflatable dolphin which could not withstand the combined onslaught of several very enthusiastic “boys” enjoying the excellent pool. 🙂
For anyone wanting a real break with some insight into a working farm but also with excellent facilities whether self-catering or in the BnB (some of our wedding guests stayed in the big house itself), Bocaddon is the place to stay. For self-catering meat-eaters I really do recommend the Bocaddon farm veal, it is absolutely delicious and comes from livestock reared under the very highest welfare standards, not a crate in sight. Same comments apply to the eggs – look out for the ones with the pale blue shells, not only pretty but good and tasty too.
